Asian Americans and the Challenge of Medical Missions

Asian American Christians health care workers have shown a high level of interest in medical missions as evidenced by a disproportionately large percentage of Asian Americans who attend missions conferences such as Urbana or Louisville GMHC. Yet relatively small percentage end up as long term medical missionaries at this time. A panel of long-term Asian American health care workers will discuss potential barriers as well as potential solutions for Asian Americans serving as long term medical missionaries.

Objectives

1. Explore the characteristics of Asian American culture and Asian American sense of identity.
2. Explore how the Asian American culture and Asian American sense of identity may pose barriers to long term medical missionary service.
3. Explore how the Asian American culture and Asian American sense of identity can be leveraged to encourage long term medical missionary service.
