I went to Ukraine wanting to serve God and His people with the knowledge and skills that I’ve gained in my first 2 years of medical school and witness God saving people through His Word. I had gone to El Salvador with CMDA last year when I was a first year medical student and had a privilege of helping the nurses with triage, shadowing different doctors while they saw patients, and seeing patients myself under doctors’ supervision. In Ukraine, I was asked by the team leader to see the patients on my own everyday and he let me know that he and another provider will be available to help me any time. It seemed like a daunting task at first, but I asked the Lord to give me wisdom and help me utilize all the medical knowledge that I had diligently obtained in the first two years of medical school.
While serving the people in Ukraine, the Lord taught me what it looks like to surrender myself to Him day by day. I had given my life to Jesus when I became a Christian, but I had limited life experiences to live out Christ’s lordship over my life, except for perhaps a daily struggle with sin and reliance on Christ’s finished work on the cross for forgiveness. It was physically exhausting to be up and running by 5:30 in the morning and finally go to bed around 10:30 at night. It was so tiring to see so many people all day, talk with them all day, think on my feet all day, and hear about some of their really difficult stories all day. By the end of the 3rd day, I was exhausted and really needed God’s intervention to give me the strength and joy that I needed to serve Him and His people. I don’t think I’ve ever experienced the intensity of exhaustion that I experienced in Ukraine ever in my life. The faithful Lord Jesus answered my prayers and gave me supernatural energy and joy to get through the rest of the week. In addition, the Lord blessed me to have multiple opportunities to witness the power and sufficiency of the Word of God to convict people of their sins and to receive Christ as their Lord and Savior (Hebrews 4:12) - this was the best part of the trip!
I came back from Ukraine so happy to have seen God pouring mercy upon His people and strengthening the Christians in Ukraine through the service and love that our team was able to share. Moreover, I grew in my passion for the glory of God and for all people to worship the Lord Jesus Christ. It is my prayer that I will humbly submit to God’s purposes for my life and go serve Him wherever He calls me to!
