My Bio

I'm a Family Physician with additional training in international public health, tropical medicine, seminary, and two years of on the job training in essential surgery (in Africa). I teach family medicine residents at Mayo Clinic Rochester where I am a proceduralist, maintain a family practice, direct the Mayo International Health Program that facilitates student/resident/fellow international health electives from all specialties and Mayo Clinic schools, and provide direction to Mayo Clinic on global health involvement as a member of the Mayo Clinic Abroad steering committee. I previously directed an annual "A Taste of Tropical Medicine" global health volunteerism short course on the Mayo Campus for many years (talks from prior lectures and resources are webcast on line). I actively facilitate the development and ministry of Compassion Evangelical Hospital in Guinea and serve on the board of our local medical supply missions warehouse. I spent about 3 years in total doing clinical work and teaching in Cote d'Ivoire, Togo, and Uganda. My wife, Svea, a former charter jet and air ambulance pilot for Mayo Clinic now second career seminary student and Bible teacher, and I have 6 children ages 11 to 22 (and a yellow lab, rabbit, and chickens).
