I have been doing dental missionary trips for 6 years now. After the first trip, I knew that mission trips were for me. I reached a time in my life that I knew I needed to give back to my profession because dentistry had been very good to me. Having been blessed with a successful dental practice, I was able to continue my passion for dentistry yet practice in a different setting.
I noticed very early that whenever there was a dentist on the Team, the patients were “wrapped” around the building. I felt I had to stay on the fast track because I wanted to give the patients every possible opportunity to be seen and be rid of their toothache. I became more organized and a better multi-tasker to see as many patients as possible. I was “giving back” and it made me proud.
As a dental Team leader I would be with dentists whose core was their spirituality. I felt that since they were doing all the praying, I could focus on treatment and see as many patients as possible.
On a recent GHO trip (Jan 2013), we spoke of readiness to hear and accept our Lord. It finally occurred to me that my success and gift for dentistry did not come from dentistry. It came from God. I made myself get out of my comfort zone to take the time to pray with/for my patients because I wanted to expose them to Jesus Christ. I have been doing a great job of giving back to dentistry; but now, it is time to step up to the plate and Give Back To God.
