After praying for 37 years to be used by God in Africa as a missionary nurse, the opportunity came in 2004. A pediatric neurosurgeon (Dr. Ben Warf) invited me to visit the CURE Children's Hospital of Uganda. The task given to me was to encourage the nurses to be Christian nurses. What began as a little Bible study on the ward during afternoon rest time, has developed into a seminar called CURE International Christian Worldview of Nursing: Theory and Practice. It has been a great joy to serve as a consultant, cheerleader and collaborator to nurses in many of the CURE International Hospitals. These seminars are provided for the national nursing staff in our hospitals. We are able to make the materials come alive with case studies, review of best practices, discussions, prayer and Bible exploration. Group discoveries have included:
All truth is God's truth. (Nurses' knowledge base draws from a wide range of subjects and must be current.)
Complaining is a sin against God. (Polite expression of needs is more appropriate than complaining)
Gifts and thanks should not be expected from patients. (Nursing is a duty and responsibility that is paid by employer and rewarded by God.)
Significantly, nurses, even non-Christian nurses, recognize that Christian nursing is different based upon the character, values and perspective that are the foundation of Christian nursing practice.
It has been my joy and privilege to work as a volunteer nurse consultant for CURE International since 2009. Who could have imagined that God would use me as a middle aged nurse. with adult children and little grandchildren? I get to travel all over Africa to offer excellence in nursing techniques and life saving skills. Mostly, it is a great testimony of our Great God's call. His timing is perfect. His ways are perfect. The LORD Jesus who healed and proclaimed His kingdom continues to do so through His people serving at CURE International Hospitals and Special Programs throughout the world. It is pure joy to join this work where the LORD is moving around the world.
