Dental Impact
February 2016

From Jeff:

As we head toward spring we look forward to the opportunities that come our way here at Christian Dental Association.

• We have just matched two outstanding 4th year dental students to our CMDA Dental Residency [+] program in Memphis, one from the University of Kentucky and the other from the University of Mississippi dental schools. (both will be highlighted in an upcoming newsletter)

• A number of our CMDA dental members will be traveling internationally to provide state of the art dental CE to dental missionaries serving around the globe at an upcoming conference.

• Drs. Pete Dawson, Van Haywood and Witt Wilkerson will be providing dental CE at our upcoming CMDA National Convention - go to www.cmda.org for more information and to register for this time of spiritual refreshing with colleagues from across the nation.

• At this year’s Emerging Leaders in Dentistry Symposium, we have invited dental students/residents from around the world in partnership with international CMDA.

• Members continue to serve through GHO and MEI international trips
And while there are always ministry opportunities through CMDA, we never forget that most ministry happens daily in the course of your life: in your practice, at home and in your communities. It is our privilege to remember you in prayer as you continue to live out your call in the context to which God has directed.

I think you will enjoy reading the two short articles in this newsletter from dentist members that are living out their call. The first from Dr. Trice, a recent graduate, as she learns from God during a time of transition into residency in Memphis and the second (which will be posted later) from Dr. Van der Werff as he shares with us an approach to sharing the Gospel to which we as dentists can directly relate.

CMDA Dental Residency [+]

As you know, when a child is bad they get put in time out most likely a corner. Well what happens when a child is good?! They get put in a corner of western Tennessee. It all started one night in Main Square of Krakow, Poland while looking for a place to have dinner. Memphis came up in the conversation and from there it was all in accordance with the Lord’s plan. Relocating to Memphis seemed to be nerve-wracking for the first couple of weeks. Starting out, I did not have a place to call my own and I lacked support from family. It seemed as if nothing was going as planned. Due to what society says about Memphis, I admit I had developed quite a level of skepticism towards the city. In addition to added frustrations of dealing with unreliable real estate agencies during this time of relocation. To top it all off, when I thought I’d found a home, I was told by the landlord that because I was now a “dentist” he would increase the rent and charge a non-refundable move in fee. All because of the status of my career. But I chose to trust that God had something better in store.

Little did I know a tight community was here in Memphis to help along the way. Several housing opportunities opened up, buying me time until God provided a house for me to call my own.

As a result, I was reminded that I am one of God’s children and His love continues to show me that he loves me enough to give me help whenever I’m in need. My independent spirit made it hard for me to willingly allow others into my life. Once God placed me in this situation and taught me that it’s important to accept the blessings He bestows, it became easier for me to fully embrace God’s plan when He chooses to use others. I can say for the first time in my life I did not neglect those with selfless hearts that wanted to lend a helping hand.

The CMDA Dental Residency [+] program in Memphis has allowed me to build relationships with the current residents, within the community, serve the underserved through dentistry, and most importantly draw closer to God. I value the fact that no matter how strong and independent I am, God shows me I still deserve the gift of love when I can’t do it all on my own. God is working in this city and he is working on me! God is definitely on time and constantly puts me in situations where I have no choice but to rely on Him as well as others. I look forward to the next couple of years as I grow spiritually, mentally and physically in Christ Jesus.

Thank you for being there for me!

Prayer requests:
• Pray that I would be disciplined in my personal devotions and also my daily schedule.
• Pray for the residency program: new residents, current residents, and program directors
