Missional Dental Training

What exactly is a missional dental residency? The CMDA Dental Residency (+) is a strategic partnership between CMDA and Christ Community Health Services in Memphis, TN. The residency focuses on training dentists who feel called to serve the marginalized.

Each dental resident is trained in discipleship, community engagement through incarnational living, and excellent dental care for the underserved. Each dental resident completes a training program through Lutheran Medical Center AEGD Residency. After completing the program, dentists enter two years, designated with the (+) symbol, where they work as a dentist at Christ Community Health Services, participate in an international rotation, learn about practice management, and help to train other residents. In addition, there is a specific educational track to allow residents to be highly equipped to function as dentists in clinics for the medically underserved and teach dentists the skills to pioneer a new clinics or dental ministry. Dr. Jeff Amstutz serves as the Dental Director for CMDA, as well as director for the residency program at Christ Community.

The larger CCHF community will benefit greatly from this training ground for missional dentists. Many clinics are expanding services to include dental, and there are many longtime CCHF partners which solely focus on meeting patients’ dental needs.
