I have been on medical missions trips to Haiti and Guatemala. From a medical standpoint, there is a great need for education as far as lifestyle and the physical problems resulting from that lifestyle. That lifestyle may not be one that is illegal or immoral, but rather an activity of daily life that has been an established practice for many years. One that I observed in Guatemala was that of cooking with an open wood fire inside the house. After many years of basically living inside a wood stove, the family members had complaints of long term respiratory problems.Education pointing out the correlation between lifestyle and resulting medical problems is one thing, changing a practice that has been done for generations is another.I was impressed with the work of Impact Ministries in Guatemala.Their approach to reaching people for Christ was multi faceted with schools, agriculture and medical clinics, etc, with an emphasis on training an equipping leaders and lay people.
